Setup Performance Notifications

The Notification feature provides the ability to set counter thresholds that trigger an email notification to specified recipients. You can also specify multiple counters and the corresponding threshold values to one or multiple recipients.

Once the threshold value is reached, an email notification is automatically sent to the recipients just once - there are no additional notifications until the counter drop below the threshold. Only one email is sent for all counters that have breached a threshold. In cases where an email was sent with breached threshold counters, but the condition has been resolved, an email is sent to inform the user that the alert condition is cleared.

The body of the email will contain the Notification Name, Counter Name, Counter Value, Counter Threshold, and Date of each counter that breached the threshold:

Notification Name: Core Server - X,Y,Z

Counter Name: Database Connections - Current

Counter Value: 4.0

Counter Threshold: 1

Date: 2024-09-07T21:01:00:043

To enable notifications, you must enter the SMTP details in Setup Performance Mail Settings before proceeding.

  1. Login to Performance Monitor.

  2. Expand Service from the Navigation Pane.

  3. Click [Notification].

  4. Click [+Add] to create a new notification.

  5. On the General tab:

    • Enter a name for the notification.

    • Select the machine name from the list pre-populated with names identified by the Performance Dashboard

    • Select a category name identified for the selected machine name.

  6. On the Recipient tab:

    • Click [Add Recipient], and then enter a valid email address that will receive the notification.

    • Click [OK] to continue.

  7. On the Criteria tab (enabled only when both the Machine and Category Name have been selected on the General tab):

    • Click [+Add].

    • Choose the Counter name from the drop-down list.

    • Type a Threshold Value. Values should be in bytes or hertz.

    • Enable [Sustain] if you want to set a minimum sustained amount of time that the threshold value must exist before the notification is triggered. For example, if you set the "heap max" counter to 190MB, but also set the sustain value to ON and 5 minutes, the notification is only triggered if the heap max counter reaches 190MB for 5 minutes. If it drops below 190MB after 4 minutes, the notification is not triggered.

  8. Repeat step 7 to setup multiple counters that will individually trigger a notification.

  9. If this is the first notification you are creating for this service, enter the SMTP information. The next time you enter this screen, the SMTP values will already be displayed (but masked in the case of the password).

A test connection button is not available, so ensure you have gathered and entered the correct SMTP information before you save.

  10. Click [Save].
