Extended Device Preferences Template
Create a new extended device preferences (XDP) template and configure the device settings. You can obtain the setting values from a specific device. Refer to XDP Supported Model List before you begin.
Prior to creating the template, read the tips in Best Practices.
There are four ways to create XDP templates:
Method |
Description |
---|---|
Get Settings from Device |
This option will extract the resource settings from a device. It could take some time especially if the "Include Preferences" checkbox is checked. This is an essential step to build a Resource file which will be needed to create a template from blank. |
Create Blank Template | Create blank template by selecting a resource file that was built after executing a "Get settings from device" option. |
Copy Template |
If a template contains settings that are a very close match to the settings you need, you can easily copy the template then rename it. The copy will have a name in this format ‘Extended Device Preferences_<Date time>’. To change the name, select the new template and click on the General tab, then rename the template. Make sure to click save before you start modifying the preferences. |
If you have exported a zip file that contains XDP device information, you can import the Zip file to populate a new XDP template. |
Before you attempt to create XDP templates for Ricoh devices, there are several best practices to consider:
-
Device Model
-
One template per model – The best way to ensure a template will be successfully applied to other devices is to apply it only to devices that are the same model as the model you copied the initial settings from to create the template. Refer to XDP Supported Model List before you begin.
-
One template per model family – Although you can create a template to a model family, bear the following in mind:
Different model families may have different settings available. If there are differences within the same model family, the template process will be successful; however, you should start with a device that has ALL of the options you want to configure. If you attempt to apply a setting that does not exist on a model within the same family, the setting will simply be skipped.
If you plan to create a template that you will apply to multiple types of devices, verify that the settings work properly on all applicable device models. Keep in mind that device capabilities vary across model families and can vary across firmware versions within the same device family.

Include/exclude Ricoh device preferences settings
One way to create a template is to retrieve the resource settings using Get Settings from Device function from an existing Ricoh device connected to your network. The feature will retrieve the device resource settings and preferences settings.
-
The resource setting is composed of printer settings that are supported by the Ricoh device. (Example: Copies, SNMPv3, Orientation) The downloaded resource file can be used as base to create another configuration template with settings that references to the resource file.
-
The preferences setting contains the corresponding Ricoh device value of the resource settings. (Example: Copies= 3, SNMPv3= On, Orientation= Portrait)
To create a template using Get settings from Device set the [Include Preferences] to uncheck if you intend to modify few settings from the downloaded resource file. If you want to extract all supported printer settings and its corresponding device value, set the [Include Preferences] to check.
-
-
Go to [Configuration] → [Configuration Templates] → [Extended Device Preferences].
-
Click (Add).
-
Enter the [Template Name] and [Description].
The security group items are displayed when the group restriction function is enabled in the security settings, and you can restrict the device group to be specified for the template target.
For the security group context, refer to Configure Group Restrictions.
-
Select Get Settings from Device. This option obtains the settings from a specified device. Secure information such as passwords and security settings cannot be obtained.
-
Include or exclude preferences.
- If you check “Include Preferences”, this option imports resource setting and preferences setting. The template will display all supported printer settings with its corresponding device values, from then, you can modify the values of your intended settings or keep the values that are already set.
- If you uncheck “Include Preferences”, only the device resource setting is downloaded. The template will display all supported printer settings, from then, you can set values to your intended settings to modify and apply to other device(s) or same device.
It is recommended to uncheck the Include Preferences checkbox for faster download of resource file. This is applicable if you are planning to set several printer settings. However, if you want to get all printer settings and values, set the Include Preferences to check, and click OK, then wait for few minutes while SLNX imports all values from Ricoh device.
- Click [Select Device].
- Select the device from which to obtain the settings and click [OK].
- In [Resource Name], specify the file name for the resource data downloaded from the device. The edit box is populated automatically with the Display Name of the selected device. The resource file contains the definition of the settings available for the device.
- Specify the encryption key for the preference settings.
-
-
Click [OK].
-
Configure the required items on the [Extended Device Preferences] tab.
- Select the category of the item to configure and click to display the available setting items. You can search for an item using the search box.
- Place a check for the items to be configured and specify the values. Select items and click to omit them from the setting list. For details about each setting item, see the device's operation manual.
-
Click (Save) when the settings are complete. The configuration items are the same as the setting items on the device.
Depending on the number of settings available for the device, the download of settings from the selected device may take a few moments. When the download is successful, the template is added to the Template list. You can click on the template name and then click the Extended Device Preferences tab to view and change the template settings.
-
Go to [Configuration] → [Configuration Templates] → [Extended Device Preferences].
-
Click (Add).
-
Enter the [Template Name] and [Description].
The security group items are displayed when the group restriction function is enabled in the security settings, and you can restrict the device group to be specified for the template target. For the security group context, refer to Configure Group Restrictions.
-
Select Create Blank Template to create a template based on the existing resource.
-
Select an existing resource. You must create template using option Get Settings from Device to create a resource file.
-
Specify the encryption key for the preference settings.
-
-
Click [OK].
-
Configure the required items on the [Extended Device Preferences] tab.
-
Select the category of the item to configure and click to display the available setting items. You can search for an item using the search box.
-
Place a check for the items to be configured and specify the values. Select items and click to omit them from the setting list. For details about each setting item, see the device's operation manual.
-
-
Click (Save) when the settings are complete. The configuration items are the same as the setting items on the device.
To execute a template, register the template to a task first. For details, refer to Register a Template to a Task.
You can delete resource files for the Extended Device Preferences template from in [System] → [Server Settings] → [Repository Management] if they are not used in templates. For details, refer to Repository Management.
Import XDP Settings from a Zip file
A valid zip file containing XDP information for Ricoh or Ricoh (L) devices is comprised of 3 files: pref_resource file, preference file and a metadata file that contains all the necessary data to create a new file. The zip file for Lemark devices will contain only the preference and metadata files; the pref_resource file is not required. If the zip file does not contain the required files, the import process will fail.
-
Go to [Configuration] → [Configuration Templates] → [Extended Device Preferences].
-
Click (Import Zip File).
-
Enter the [Template Name] and [Description].
-
Click [Choose Files] to browse to the location of a previously exported XDP Zip file.
-
Click [OK] to proceed.
